Leo is one of the oldest and most famous of the ancient constellations. Its name is Latin for “Lion,” and its brightest star, Regulus, once marked the point of the June solstice — when the Sun was highest in its northern journey (due to precession, the June solstice now occurs in Taurus).

The Lion’s main star pattern is the Sickle of Leo, which can also be seen as a backward question mark with bright Regulus as the “point.” An imaginary line drawn between the two outer stars in the Big Dipper’s Bowl and carried to the south points to the Sickle. A right triangle of three conspicuous stars mark the Lion’s hind quarters.

Leo rises before the Sun in October and is highest around 9:00 p.m. in April. The saying that “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb,” refers to Leo rising after sunset in early March, while Aries sets in late March.
